Scholar Sayyed Mohamed Ali El Husseini
"Mohamad Ali El Husseini "
A bond of friendship on social media websites relates me to him. I follow his updates and he follows mine and I am often impressed by his social, political and religious views that are filled with positivity, aspiring for goodness, and inspiring towards righteousness. To know him more, I have visited his website www.mohamadelhusseini.net and was introduced to the blessed efforts exerted by the Shiite cleric Sayyed Mohamad Ali El-Husseini who calls for the Arab and Islamic unity against radicalism and warns from the dangers of sectarian strife.
Sayyed Mohamad Ali El Husseini is a Muslim, educated cleric who believes that “honesty and integrity in human transactions constitute the cornerstone of monotheistic religions and that we should attend to the commonalities between religions. Hence, the closest to God are those who spread the values of goodness and love”. He also believes that “Muslims’ abandonment of many Islamic moralities and virtues and their lack of understanding of the historical and religious backgrounds of such moralities and virtues made them embrace ill perceptions and beliefs about Islam”.
An initiating religious Sheikh who publishes books and letters, addresses lectures, lessons and speeches, and attends to official and social media. With solid persistence and determination, he travels the world visiting various countries and international organizations to contribute constructive values. You will find him lecturing in Bahrain today, in Brussels tomorrow, and in Paris day after tomorrow visiting the synagogue for a dialogue with the rabbis calling for a formation of coalition of the good to stand against the evil.
An activist, a writer, a speech-maker and an Islamic intellect who presents a modern image of an Arab and Muslim positive cleric. At peace with himself, with his Arab identity, and with the rest of his brothers in humanity from every religion and sect. I do not think that any rational and sensible Muslim, regardless of his/her nationality, can disagree with this man’s valuable views, wonderful visions, wise opinions, and virtuous invites.

Tim Schenck, member of Mennonite Central Committee, discusses the courageous peacemaker” cleric Mohammed Ali El-Husseini” –Lebanese-
In Lebanon, following the end of the war and while the team was working on a report about the war and its outcomes, I parted ways with them to follow up on a story that had caught my interest in observing the impacts of war. I saw the Shiite Muslim cleric Mohammed Ali El-Husseini on TV where he was talking in an amazing way about how he refused war, violence and acts of terrorism.
Along the Tyre-South Lebanon road, he was distributing copies of his book titled: “Violence and Nonviolence: Questions and Answers” written in Arabic and English. Afterwards, Fadi Abi Allam, President of Permanent Peace Movement, who was also a fellow member of Mennonite Central Committee, arranged a meeting with the Shiite Muslim cleric Mohamed Ali El-Husseini and he was quite enthusiastic to meeting him. I went together with Fadi and his friend Sonia to meet Mr. El-Husseini in a hotel in Beirut since his home and office were bombed during the Israeli aggression against the Southern Suburb of Beirut and sustained damages.
During the meeting, cleric Mohamed Ali El-Husseini was wearing black cloak and turban, the ideal attire of any Shiite Muslim cleric. He greeted us and presented copies of his book and started explaining to us his believes with regards to peace and how peace can be made and materialized on the ground. He also talked about how to stay away from violence. Cleric El-Husseini’s book cites sayings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Otherking Jr. He also talked about Jesus, his antiviolence movement and his outlook of life.
In his book, Cleric El-Husseini discusses how peace and nonviolence are related to Islam and how the latter promotes them, as well as how Islam does not justify violence. El-Husseini says: “There is no doubt that nonviolence is the effective solution for various crises and peace can never be spread except through communication, discussion and dialogue and by creating harmony and rapport among human beings”. I left the meeting optimistic because of the fact that I had been lucky and honored by meeting a courageous peacemaker in a country suffering from war.
At the end, I would like to say that in light of the tensions and instability prevailing across our region, which is poised for even further seditions such as sectarian seditions, we have to encourage influential scholars and intellectuals like cleric Mohamed Ali El-Husseini who promote peace. He experienced war, devastation and acts of violence and his house and office had been bombed, yet he made TV appearances encouraging people, inviting them to peace and asking them to shun violence and fighting. He endeavored with diligence and honestly to spread peace and love and to cultivate a culture of tolerance, forgiveness and nonviolence. That is indeed a great humanitarian undertaking by a courageous Muslim man who’s filled with opinions and narratives of an authoritative figure who dedicated his time and effort for the purpose of peacemaking.
The reason that compelled me to introduce Cleric El-Husseini was not to promote him as a person as I don’t promote persons and he himself wouldn’t accept that. But I found him a model for peace and that he is able to present a civilized image of Islam and Muslims due to his place in Lebanon, which remains to be in the global spotlight at least for this period. I therefore made an attempt to introduce him in order to support his project since he told me that he has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Prize for Peace. I wish him best of luck.
I wish that likes of Mr. Mohamed El-Husseini who strive to spread peace would have the luck necessary for them to accomplish their duty as best as possible. This would enable them to contribute effectively in making the world hear our voice and know that our Islam and our religious figures promote peace and are peacemakers.
Violence and Nonviolence: Questions and Answers

The book titled: “Violence and Nonviolence: Questions and Answers” contains answers by His Eminence Mohamed Ali El-Husseini regarding the position of Islam on the following issues: violence and its notion, does Shariah condone violence, what is the concept of terrorism, how does it relate to Jihad, what is the relationship between oppression, dictatorship, political suppression and violence? Etc.
El Husseini: our vision to counter extremism is to confront who are misusing the misleading jurisprudence
The world in general and the Arab and Islamic worlds especially are facing, an increasing level of extremism and hatred that refuses the acceptance of the other. This twisted logic is anti heavenly teachings and anti humanitarian as well and it stands against all civilization meanings. It represents the largest contemporary threat facing the whole humanity and requires urgent and consolidated efforts at various levels and in more than one area in order to stave off this threat. The religious level represents the most important in this field and must be granted some exceptional importance because the most of the currents terrorist and extremist groups are based in the wrong understanding and distorting foundations and jurisprudential legitimacy. Moreover, these groups are misusing these legitimate foundations in contradictory contexts with their original frameworks.
Based on all what was mentioned above, we found that the core of our duty and the duty of all Muslims distinguished scholars as well is to address this takfirist tide that left the right path. The best tool to be used in these efforts can be seen by getting these stray people back to the true divine trail and statement standing on the real doctrinal foundations.
God Almighty said in the holy book, the Quran, while describing the Muslims (we created you as a middle Umma that you be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be the witness over you), and as said the prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, in the Hadith :( best things are the moderate ones). The forethought in the Quran verse and as well in the Hadith, shows that the wisdom is in the moderation on the base known (No over extremism and no over passing over), in the sense that the Muslim should be the symbol of moderation in religion.
The one who is trying to portray Islam as a religion of extremism and hatred, is the person who does not understand the Islam at all; Islam is mainly in the center position between religions, and this is clear in matters of Islamic attitude regarding Jesus son of Mary, peace be upon him, as well as with respect to the Islamic stance regarding divorce and retribution and rewards and punishment, as well as in terms of various branches of worship. It is necessary at the moment to be brought to the attention and minds of young Muslims and as well as our beloved children, as they are at their beginning of the road, in order to avoid them to be transformed into easy victims to these stray and deviant ideas that are acting in a hostile way to Islam, although they are pretended the opposite.
Today, in the midst of the intensification of the political intellectual attack of the groups and misguided circles that try to offer narrow explanation through distorted various jurisprudence texts, we feel afraid of the potential distortion of the minds of young Muslims and of pushing them in the way in which they will be no good deeds for them and for the Umma as a whole. And therefore, this situation requires a need for an urgent launch of an awareness and extensive campaign in order to fight these misguided and deviant ideas, which take us all too deep valleys of extremism and hatred and that increase the radicalism spirit.
These stray cliques are misleading and alleging that they draw from the good ancestors and from the depths of Islamic history, however these cliques are committing the most notorious crimes for the Umma, and they are shadowing the brilliant bright side of Islamic history and heritage. Throughout the various stages and different historical eras, there were Islamic scholars and intellectuals who insisted on the spirit of tolerance and moderation our religion, it is important to refute and disprove misleading allegations of these drifted cliques. Meanwhile, we need to reveal the true pillars of our religion that do not only reject but cancel completely this radical heresy.
In this context, we note that many of the leaders and the heads of these misguided groups refer to historical incidents or religious texts that represent a controversy, especially with respect to rhetoric on the Prophet Muhammad’s hadith.
We must address these, who are blinded by their intolerance, and they are blinds who want to lead other, and they are addressing the public issues according to their fake desires, because they marched according to a short-term vision. Therefore, the duties of enlightenment and awareness come on top of things that must be taken seriously to face the states of religious extremism and fanaticism.
This faithful awareness campaign, that we call to launch it, must infiltrate to various fields and activities so that it can ensure that they reach the ears of every one and most especially the youth. On the top priority of this media awareness activities come the radio and television programs as well as dramas and movies and theater performances. Most of these activities should be aimed and moved on the basis of this campaign with a deep commitment to perform the best tasks and to reach the aims.

Shi'ite Lebanese cleric holds out olive branch to Jews, Christians in non-violence campaign
Sayyed Mohamad El Ali Husseini preaches inter-faith tolerance in multi-lingual Facebook messages.
shi'ite Lebanese cleric has extended an olive branch to Jewish and Christian leaders around the world with a message of non-violence.
Sayyed Mohamad Ali El Husseini, secretary general of the Arabic Islamic Council, took to Facebook on Sunday to warn of the dangers of religious extremism.
“We call on rabbis, priests, cardinals and Muslim clerics, Sunni and Shia, to play down the verses, the scriptures, the traditions and the religious texts that call for violence, because they are more dangerous than nuclear weapons," he wrote at the beginning of a long message.
“The various religious texts which call for the use of violence and cruelty to achieve goals are extremely dangerous texts when used by groups that we have warned against in the past, as these texts give religious authorization to commit acts of violence and murder," he added. "Obviously, these are texts that were implemented in specific and even limited times, places and situations - they cannot necessarily be applied to our time, since every situation has its own unique conditions and circumstances.
This message comes just a few weeks after he posted two videos to his Facebook page, one in Hebrew which he addresses his Jewish "cousins", and the other in English in which he addresses both Jews and Christians. "Know that we are your cousins and followers of Prophet Ishmael, son of Prophet Abraham. We both belong to the same family and are relatives as your ancestor and ours were brothers who had the same father, i.e. Prophet Abraham," he says.
"We respect and sanctify Holy Scriptures and we believe in the Torah, Bible and Koran. We also believe in all prophets and respect them and we do not differentiate between them," he continues. "We believe that not all Jews are evil, not all Christians are depraved and not all Muslims are terrorists. Our cousins, let us therefore leave behind our differences, stay away from evil and hatred, reject extremism and violence and refuse to accept bigotry."
These messages are part of a larger social media campaign for peace and co-existence: Husseini's Facebook page is filled with messages in Arabic, Hebrew, English and French preaching non-violence. Among these is a condemnation of the deadly attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.
Husseini describes the paper's satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad as "ignorance," which he sees as an opportunity to explain to the world "the personality of the Prophet Mohamad and his universal message for all of humanity..."
Scholar El-Husseini: Peaceful Coexistence is the Foundation and Essence of Revealed Religions
Peaceful coexistence among the nations that embrace different revealed religions is an extremely important and serious topic that can be considered as a best feature and a suitable basis for establishing peace and security and creating a real stability in the realistic and literal sense of the word. This is because, for the most part, it reflects the philosophy, essence, and attitude of these religions, their perception standard, as well as their holistic understanding and harmony with the human reality.
Humanity suffered extremely from the historical eras and phases that witnessed conflicts and wars based on religious differences, or rather political issues and ambitions covered by religion. Such black times teemed with very enormous humanitarian nightmares and disasters that can no longer be afforded by humanity after the big prices it paid from the different generations of the nations belonging to all the revealed religions throughout the world.
If we came back to these religion-based wars and bloody conflicts to carefully study them, we would find them caused mainly by two basic motivations:
First, the assumption that one religion or religious sect is better than the other, which fills the hearts with hatred and urges for the death of others for allegedly upholding the religion throughout many of such black historical times.
Second, the nations’ ignorance of the religions, their essence and their humanitarian tendency towards peaceful coexistence, especially that these historical phases lacked religious scholars with profound knowledge in these religions and good understanding of their basic message which calls for the need for peaceful coexistence as their main pillar and substance.
The efforts of the extremists and narrow-minded persons which aim, unfortunately, at making Islam, combined with the other revealed religions, appear as a religion refusing the others and urging for their extermination and death are suspicious, distorted, Islamophobic, and contradicting with its teachings.
“Say: O People of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him)”.
By reading the former noble verse, we see it summarizing the principles of coexistence among the revealed religions, all of which agree that there is only one God who is the source and origin of all religions, and that this God is infallible and inviolable. They also agree on the need for common understanding on the goals and objectives, and for the joint cooperation with a view to achieving commonly agreed goals. Therefore, we refer our disputed issues to the points that were found agreed on within our heritage. This allows us to develop a common basis among these religions through the tolerance which strongly combines and links all such issues. There is no doubt that all the revealed religions contain enough teachings calling for tolerance; therefore, it is incumbent upon their scholars to call for the culture of tolerance.
Looking back at the historical times and eras that witnessed bloody religious conflicts which cost the innocent people their lives, we would find them imbued with a culture of malice, hatred, and exclusion and refusal of other religions. Such a hostile culture that conflicts with the principle on which all the revealed religions were based nourished the minds with tendencies towards relying on cruelty and violence as means of imposing one religion over the other ones. After all these centuries, not only years or decades, neither do we find that one religion has won the conflict nor do we find that a single religion in the entire world has been eradicated or extinguished. Conversely, both the religions and the nations are alive, but it is only the culture of religious hatred which is based on ignorance and amti-religious sentiments that has extinguished to some extent. This bears a profound meaning that should be carefully contemplated.
Nowadays, as we are again facing a conspicuous escalation of the culture of religious hatred and the efforts aimed at its revival and resurrection: all of us, particularly the religious scholars, should understand that such a defective and obscurant culture is conflicting with the religions in the first place. We should also understand that its resurrection will harm the religions and their humanitarian message which is full of love, compassion, friendliness, communication, sacrifice, and altruism. Accordingly, we are not only required to emphasize the culture of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and acceptance of the other, but we are also required to advocate it using all the possible means. In this way, we can achieve many goals and objectives and, above all, advocate the essence and foundation of the revealed religions.
